Christian Education for Children

Our Childrens Programs

Let their never be a time that children do not feel completely welcome! To that end we have many programs for children and youth, to involve, engage and celebrate them. Christian formation begins with Baptism. All baptized children of any age may receive communion at St. Andrew’s.

A Prayer for Young Persons
(From the Book of Common Prayer, p.829)

God our Father, you see your children growing up in an unsteady and confusing world: Show them that your ways give more life than the ways of the world, and that following you is better than chasing after selfish goals. Help them to take failure, not as a measure of their worth, but as a chance for a new start. Give them strength to hold their faith in you, and to keep alive their joy in your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Because we recognize that learning about God and his multitude of gifts and promises is a life-long task, we begin the process of Christian formation with our children at birth. Our nursery is staffed with loving people who tend to their needs. Our preschoolers and early education students to grade one use the Godly Play program written by Jerome Berryman. This Montessori-based classroom engages the children through storytelling and wondering to help the children make the many stories of the Bible their own.

Our primary and intermediate students in grades two through six use the Episcopal Children’s Curriculum. This program is a comprehensive look at the Episcopal Church and its teachings. A goal for children at this stage is to become familiar with and be able to use the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer as aides to study and worship.

In addition, Sunday School students receive music instruction as part of their Christian Education. They learn about the music of the Church, including hymns, service music and contemporary worship music. Sunday morning Christian Education takes place during the Liturgy of the Word beginning between 10 and 10:15 AM. Children rejoin the congregation at the Peace, enabling them to celebrate Holy Communion. From time to time the children will present musical offerings during the 10:30 AM service. Acolytes are trained for service in grade four and up. Children who are strong readers are encouraged to be lectors.

"Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." Mark 10:14
